It’s been a long time! We hope you’ve all stayed well, and found loads of good things to do in your lockdown. Thank goodness the better weather came along at last.
Beacon is still here, ready to welcome you back, and has even made a few changes in your absence, most noticeably in the bouldering. The area known as the back bouldering has had an extreme makeover – the slab is slabbier all along one side for the technicians among you, and the opposite side is now a sleek 25 degree overhang all the way across (see Dave modelling the wall in the photo 😊). Not only that, but we’ve added friction! Watch out for our time lapse rebuild video on social media soon, and check out Facebook and Instagram for pictures as we have them.
The area we call the front bouldering has also had a makeover – a new light colour scheme for the walls and brand new matting. Watch out, the matting will feel a bit firm to start with. The traverse wall in the main area has also had the treatment, with a colour scheme to match the ground floor bouldering. Our beautiful blank canvases will be fully covered with a huge number of problems by the time you all arrive. We took delivery of a lovely big new batch of holds a while back, and some of these are already in place on routes for you thanks to the hard work of our in-house setters. Every reason to come back and say hello :-) If that wasn’t enough, we’ll have a new way of recording the aggregates – no more paper!
Of course, there are still restrictions: Masks, hand washing, sanitising, social distancing, and the same cap on numbers climbing. You already know the routine, so don’t let up just yet. Unfortunately, our café won’t be allowed to open on the 3rd as well, but we expect May 17th to be the date for opening up for our usual rest and refreshments in Caffi Barcud. In the meantime, takeaway drinks and snacks will be available from reception. Bring your own folding chair and sit outside with friends (as per government rules) if the weather is nice enough.
Instruction is available from the get-go, including all our kids’ clubs, CrazyClimb and adult Learn to Climb courses. Online booking for courses is open. Beacon will be opening on an amended timetable for at least a month or two while things rev up. Check the footer at the bottom of the page for current opening times. All this is subject to change, and some bookings are available outside these times.
For all external instructors with your own groups – please call ahead and arrive with full details of each member of your group and stick to government rules on numbers. Call us if you need to visit us earlier than we currently open and we’ll do our best to accommodate you.
Finally, please always refer to the latest Welsh Government guidelines.
