Problem Avoidance and Simple Solutions

The aim of this session is to provide instructors with some simple ways of dealing with problems when working with groups on climbing walls, and how to avoid them in the first place! It will discuss what equipment is useful to have when running sessions and look briefly at first aid/casualty care procedures and fire procedures at Beacon.

Group Management

This practical session looks at different ways of managing groups on an indoor climbing wall, with a strong emphasis on how to give students maximum involvement without compromising safety. It will help give instructors a range of techniques and discuss which ones work best in different situations.

NICAS Induction (£50 per person)

The National Indoor Climbing Achievement Scheme is a UK wide scheme designed to introduce individuals to climbing on artificial structures and to accredit their achievements. This session will introduce instructors to the scheme, how it is taught and, if appropriate, how the scheme could be run at their own climbing walls.

Intro Courses & Assessments (SPA, CWA instructors only)

This session is designed to cover all the skills necessary to bring novices or relative novices to a standard where they are able to look after themselves safely on bouldering and top roping walls. Topics covered during the course also include student assessment as well as the Beacon registration procedure but does not cover lead climbing.

Monday 12th December 2011

Lead Climbing (SPA, CWA only)

Lead climbing is beyond the scope of the SPA/CWA but provided some strict guidelines are followed, SPA/CWA qualified instructors can incorporate it into their sessions at Beacon Climbing Centre. This session covers the factors involved with teaching lead climbing at a climbing wall and how best to go about introducing students safely to leading. At the end of the second session you will be given a short assessment, issued course notes and a certificate of attendance.

Lead climbing is split into two sessions.

Monday 9th January 2012 (session 1- training)
Monday 16th January 2012 (session 2 – training & assessment)

Bouldering and Games Workshop

Looking at how to keep bouldering fun and safe, this session will cover subjects such as warming up/down, bouldering group management, structuring sessions and movement development games, including games used here in the Beacon's own Kids Club. It's a great chance to pick-up some new ideas to help keep your bouldering sessions fun and interesting.
