Course assessment details
![]()
The Beacon Climbing Centre assessment is designed to test your ability to use the bouldering and top roping walls safely and without supervision. A successful assessment will allow you to sign up as a member of Beacon and to use the climbing centre whenever you like. All students finishing the Beginner Climbing Course or a series of taster sessions take the assessment as well as those who have been taught by friends and wish to progress to Beacon membership.
Beacon Climbing Centre assessments are informal affairs and, as important as the technical skills, is the importance of understanding the inherent risks of using a climbing wall and the ethic of taking responsibility for your own actions.
Assessment only costs £10. Please contact us to book.
Taking the next step
![]()
Once you have successfully completed a Beginner Climbing Course and registering as a Beacon Climbing Centre member, you can now visit the Beacon as often as you like! The information below is to help you take the next step.
Equipment
The variety and cost of climbing equipment can seem daunting at first but like any new sport once you have the basic gear it will last you a long time. To start off with most new climbers will hire equipment from Beacon Climbing Centre but it is well worth keeping an eye on our second hand shoes. If you liked your Beacon hire shoes we sell this model at a very reasonable price and we also sell the locally made chalk bags, which at £8.50 are probably one the cheapest chalk bags available. For a much bigger selection of climbing shoes and for a harness, belay plate and karabiner we recommend V12 Outdoor in Llanberis. All students completing our Beginner Climbing Course receive a voucher worth £10 off your first purchase of £50 or more at V12 Outdoor.
Entry Charges
As a regular visitor to Beacon Climbing Centre, it is well worth investing in one of our 10-entry cards as this will save you £1 every visit. Anyone completing our Beginner Climbing Course receives a £10 discount on their first Beacon 10-entry ticket.
Climbing Partners
A common problem for students finishing the Beacon Beginner Climbing Course is finding climbing partners at a similar stage. Many people end up climbing with friends they have made on the course. An alternative is to post a notice on our board.
Learning to Lead
Beacon Climbing Centre run an indoor Lead Climbing Course over 2 evenings and this course is highly recommended if you want to start take your climbing to the next level by leading routes. Details are available at reception or you can find out more information via our website here.
Signing others into Beacon Climbing Centre
Adult members are able to sign in up to two novices; however we recommend that as newcomers to climbing you don't sign friends into until you have gained more experience, normally at least 6 months. You can, however bring up to two of your children in to climb provided you are not climbing yourself and are able to supervise them 100% of the time.
Outdoor Climbing
North Wales has some of the finest outdoor climbing in the World and if you keep climbing you will inevitably be keen to give it a go. Climbing with more experienced friends is a great way to get involved, alternatively you could book onto one of our outdoor climbing courses.
Finally, while you are still new to climbing, please feel free to ask any questions you may have. The Beacon staff have lots of experience and will always be happy to help you out in any way they can.
