Bouldering Walls

Once regarded as an inferior alternative to roped climbing, bouldering has now come of age as an activity in its own right and as a result dedicated bouldering centres are popping up all over the UK. Requiring very little specialist equipment and as physical as you want it to be, bouldering is the perfect antidote to the monotony of gyms, providing a positive physical and mental workout in a sociable environment.

Bouldering is a form of low level climbing typically limited to a height of 4-4.5m. With a 300mm thick foam mat underneath, it is possible to push your limits on well-designed short climbs (termed ‘problems') that are often colour coded to give climbing circuits of escalating difficulty.

Why Bouldering?

  • More possible locations - you aren't limited by building height
  • Less structural implications than roped climbing walls
  • Generally lower set up costs
  • Less specialist equipment required
  • Can be done alone or as a group
  • Doesn't require ropework skills
  • Great fun and very good exercise!
