The new nationally recognised Climbing Wall Leading Award is aimed at experienced instructors who want to teach and supervise lead climbing on indoor climbing walls and artificial climbing structures.

Booking Information
Candidates must apply to their home nation Mountain Leader Training Board to register for the scheme and must have been accepted prior to booking onto a training course. Candidates must hold either the CWA or SPA awards and have significant experience of indoor climbing and instruction.
Training Course Structure

The one day course will concentrate on practical methods of introducing lead climbing skills to novices, supervising lead climbing safely and good decision making.
Please note that this award is intended to allow lead climbing on artificial structures only and not on any natural crag, regardless of whether it has fixed equipment.

Experience before the Training Course

You must hold either the Climbing Wall Award (CWA) or Single Pitch Award (SPA), with at least 20 logged sessions post-assessment.

You must register with one of the four Mountain Leader Training Boards (
MLTW). -
You need to be affiliated to, or a full member of the BMC.

You must have led a minimum of 50 different routes on at least three different walls and have belayed a leader on a minimum of 50 climbs. At least half of those routes led must have been at a grade of French 6a or above.
Experience before the Assessment Course

Consolidation period (feedback from trainer).

Must have recorded a minimum of 100 different lead climbs, at least half of which must be of grade French 6a, and have belayed a lead climber on at least 100 routes.

Must have assisted with the supervision of climbing for at least 5 teaching leading sessions delivered by a suitably qualified person.
