About Beacon Climbing
The Beacon Climbing Centre opened in 1994, and was brought to fruition on the tightest of budgets by two climbers and instructors who saw the desperate need for a large, decent climbing wall for the Llanberis area.
Since then the self-built climbing wall has expanded into almost all the available space in the old Marconi building, and provides over 1000m2 of happy climbing for all ages and abilities. The Beacon's ethos is to make climbing imaginative, exciting and accessible to all, and strives to cooperate with governing bodies, trade bodies and manufacturers to ensure that the quality of experience of all our customers is of the highest possible level. Special efforts have been made for the education of the increasing numbers of young people coming into climbing via the climbing wall.
The success of the centre is, in the main, due to the enthusiasm and deep involvement of the directors, staff and freelance instructors, and to responding to customer feedback. Routes are changed regularly by well-trained experienced staff and visiting route-setters.
The climbing walls and holds have nearly all been manufactured by the Beacon itself since 1994, and approaches from other organisations for their own climbing walls resulted in a ‘sideline' in manufacturing. A second business deals with this, under the same ownership of Gill Lovick and Steve Mayers - Beacon Climbing Walls Ltd. The manufacturing company has the advantage of daily feedback from customers to the Centre, or from staff working with different user groups, enabling imaginative climbing holds and climbing walls to be created, tailored to the specific needs of different climbing wall users, from tiny tots to superheroes.
