More about intro courses
The intro course covers everything you need to know to use the Beacon
bouldering and top roping walls safely. Our qualified instructors
will take you carefully through the basic climbing techniques as
well as the rope work necessary to use the top roping walls. On
the fourth session you will take an informal assessment (see below)
so that, if successful, you can start to use the wall independently.
The price of the course includes all equipment, instruction, entry
to the wall and a copy of the BMC booklet ‘New Climbers’.
More about the assessment
The Beacon assessments are designed to test your ability to use
the bouldering and top roping walls safely and without supervision.
A successful assessment allows you to sign up as a member of the
Beacon and to use the wall whenever you like. Students finishing
the intro course or a series of taster sessions take the assessment
as well as those that have been taught by friends and also want
to progress to Beacon membership. The Beacon assessments are informal
affairs and, as important as the technical skills, is the importance
of understanding the inherent risks of using a climbing wall and
the ethic of taking responsibility for your own actions.
Assessment only costs £10 (please ring to book).

‘Taking the next step’
Once you have successfully completed a Beacon Intro course
and registering as a Beacon member. You can now visit the Beacon
as often as you like! The information below is to help you take
the next step.
Equipment
The variety and cost of climbing equipment can seem daunting at
first but like any new sport once you have the basic gear it will
last you a long time. To start off with most new climbers will hire
equipment from the Beacon but it is well worth keeping an eye on
our second hand shoes. If you liked your Beacon hire shoes we sell
this model at a very reasonable price and we also sell the locally
made Quara chalk bags, which at £8.50 are probably one the
cheapest chalk bags available. For a much bigger selection of climbing
shoes and for a harness, belay plate and karabiner we recommend
V12 Outdoor in Llanberis. All students completing an intro course
receive a V12 voucher worth £10 off your first purchase of
£50 or more at V12 Outdoor.
Entry charges
As a regular visitor to the Beacon it is well worth investing in
one of our 10-entry cards as this will save you 80p a visit. All
students completing an intro course receive a £10 discount
on their first Beacon 10-entry ticket.
Climbing partners
A common problem for students finishing the Beacon Intro course
is finding climbing partners at a similar stage. Many students end
up climbing with friends they have made on the course an alternative
is to post a notice on our board.
Learning to lead
The Beacon run an indoor lead climbing course over 2 evenings and
these are highly recommended if you want to start leading routes,
details are available at reception.
Signing others into the wall
We insist that as newcomers to climbing you don’t sign friends
into the wall as novices until you have been climbing for at least
a year. You can, however bring up to two of your children in to
climb provided you are supervising them 100% of the time.
Outdoor climbing
North Wales has some of the finest outdoor climbing in the World
and if you keep climbing you will inevitably be keen to give it
a go. More experienced friends are the ideal people to introduce
you, alternatively if you can muster a group of 4 the Beacon charge
an all in price of £160 for a day out with a qualified mountain
instructor.
Finally remember that you are still very new to climbing and that
the Beacon staff will always be happy to help you out in any way
they can.
